Hi guys! You may remember this recent post, where I pitched budget against high-end mascaras. The second installment here saw Benefit Rollerlash and Primark Lash Defining Mascara come in at a tie! Well today is the final installment of Mascara Match! Today I’m pitching Benefit They’re Real against Primark False Lash Effect mascara.
Budget v High-End Makeup
As I’ve said in my earlier posts, it’s so easy to assume that if a product costs more, it must be better. After trying out a ton of different makeup products and brands over the years, I feel like that’s really not the case. Some of my go-to products that I use every single time I wear makeup are budget AKA cheap!
I tell anyone I know ‘in real life’ about how great Primark mascaras are, and that they must try them. So it’s about time I share the secret with you too!
The False Lash Effect Mascaras
These are the type of mascaras you turn to when you want DRAMA! When you want to take a makeup look from day to night, false lash effect mascaras are what you need. If you’re like me and are terrible at applying false lashes, these mascaras are the way of getting long, thick, dramatic lashes without any fuss!
Primark False Lash Effect Mascara
The Primark False Lash Effect Mascara (in the gold packaging below) has a very large wand, but it’s also very soft and the bristles are flexible.I never use this mascara as my first coat. I always do two coats of mascara, and I prefer the first one to be a defining, lengthening one. But this one is perfect for adding some oomph to my lashes – it really builds them up, but doesn’t leave them clumpy. It leaves them fluttery and truly false-lash like! I have quite long eyelashes naturally, but once I use this, they genuinely are as long as fake strip lashes 🙂
It isn’t waterproof (which is fine by me) but it lasts all day and doesn’t smudge or crumble. As I’ve mentioned in the previous Mascara Match posts, the only downside for me is that you can’t buy anything from Primark online. As someone with chronic illnesses, I find it much easier to shop online. Maybe one day!
Benefit They’re Real! Mascara
The They’re Real wand is long and mid-sized, but the difference with this one is the little spiky ball on the end of the wand! It’s intended to get into those little corner lashes that can be hard to reach with regular wands.
Benefit says: “they’re real! lengthens, curls, volumizes, lifts and separates. Our jet black, long-wearing formula won’t smudge or dry out. A specially designed brush reveals lashes you never knew you had!”I have to say, the little ball on the wand is the only thing I really like about this mascara. It really reaches those little inner corner lashes well, and makes a real difference to the final look. Now, if only I could have a ball on the end of the Benefit Rollerlash or one of the Primark mascaras, it’d be perfect!
I had high hopes when I tried They’re Real. The name made me assume that they’d make your lashes look like you were wearing falsies. You’d be walking down the street and everyone would be like: “are you wearing false lashes” and you’d say “no… They’re Real!” This didn’t happen. Lol!
The mascara lengthens enough to be a decent daytime mascara. But the volumising isn’t great. Don’t get me wrong, it does volumise… but it does that by clumping all your lashes together! It’s such a clumpy mascara and once you’re wearing two coats, it really doesn’t look great in my opinion. Definitely not something I’d ever repurchase.
Well, I think there’s a very clear winner here! The Primark mascara is lovely and is pretty much always my second coat after using a lengthening & defining first coat. It gives a super long, thick, fluttery effect. I’ve repurchased it several times and will definitely have it on my shopping list in the future!
The Benefit They’re Real mascara just isn’t for me. If you actually like the clumpy lash effect (I know some people do) then maybe you’ll like it. But for me, I couldn’t even finish the tube. And at £20.50, that’s a lot of money to waste!! The Primark mascara will also save you £18.50!
It’s worth mentioning that since I bought my Primark mascaras, they have changed the packaging. Most of them seem to be uniform in black and gold packaging now – so you’ll have to go by the names if you’re looking for the ones I’ve reviewed!
