Mascara Match // Benefit Rollerlash v Primark Lash Defining Mascara // Can Budget Beat High-End?

Hi guys!  You may remember this recent post, where I pitched budget against high-end mascaras.  Well today is the next installment of Mascara Match!  Primark Volumising Ultra Black mascara beat Benefit Bad Gal Lash last time – can Primark win again?  Today, Primark’s Lash Defining Mascara is pitched against Benefit Rollerlash!  Let the battle commence…

Budget v High-End Makeup

It’s so easy to assume that if a product costs more, it must be better.  After trying out loads of different makeup products and brands over the years, I’ve realised that’s really not the case.  Some of my favourite products that I use every single time I wear makeup are budget (otherwise known as cheap)!  I rave on to anyone I know ‘in real life’ about how great Primark mascaras are, and that they must try them.  So it’s about time that I share the secret with you guys!

The Defining/Separating Mascaras

These mascaras are the ones you turn to when you want each lash separately coated and defined.  No clumps here – they should separate the lashes and leave them looking light and fluttery!

Primark Lash Defining Mascara

The Primark Lash Defining Mascara (in the purple packaging below) has a mid-sized rubber wand, with longish spikes which help to separate the lashes.  This mascara is amazing, and SO useful!  It reminds me a lot of Benefit Rollerlash, in the effect it achieves on the lashes.

Primark Mascaras

It isn’t waterproof, but that’s fine as I prefer not to wear waterproof mascara where possible.  I find it too annoying to remove!  Saying that, this mascara doesn’t smudge or crumble and lasts throughout the whole day no problem!  It is very black and I find the wand makes it very easy to apply.

I absolutely love what this mascara does to my lashes!  The wand really grips the roots, so as you drag it along the lashes, it defines every single one.  It also really lengthens the lashes, getting them SUPER long!  It doesn’t volumise very much (which is fine, as it doesn’t claim to).  But I tend to use a second coat of a volumising mascara after anyway, so the two together work really well for me.  This mascara leaves my lashes so pretty and fluttery, it’s amazing!  Great if you like a long, defined, fluttery lash.

I’m only knocking off half a point, as I find it difficult to buy.  I’m often housebound due to illness, so it’s such a shame you can’t buy from Primark online!

Benefit Rollerlash Mascara

Oh Rollerlash…. if you haven’t heard of this cult mascara then… well, where have you been?!  Benefit Rollerlash is an absolute favourite amongst YouTube and beauty bloggers.  It can make even the stumpiest lashes long and fluttery!

Benefit say: “It’s a roller for lashes! The eye-opening Hook ‘n’ Roll brush grabs, separates, lifts and curls, while the instant curve-setting formula holds for 12 hours. Contains provitamin B5 and serin, ingredients known for their lash-conditioning benefits.”

Benefit Rollerlash Mascara

I can 100% agree that the brush grabs your lashes – you can actually feel it grabbing the roots (don’t worry, it’s satisfying rather than painful!)  It separates the lashes perfectly and lengthens them nicely.  It leaves them really fine and fluttery, almost like higher-end false strip lashes.  The wand is quite slim and curved – the curve is meant to help shape and curl your lashes.  I like the control this gives you when applying the mascara.

As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t go in for the natural look: I like my lashes dramatic!  So I tend to top Rollerlash with a coat of a volumising mascara to amp up the volume a bit.  But that’s just personal preference.  If you use two coats of Rollerlash alone, you can get a beautiful, fluttery effect.

I also really like the packaging of Benefit Rollerlash – it’s pretty and feminine.  A bit different to everything else out there!

The Winner!

Oooh, so Primark has just pipped Benefit to the post!  So close, at 9 out of 10 to Benefit and 9.5 to Primark.  Check out this post, where Primark beat Benefit again, in a battle of the volumising mascaras!

For me, Primark wins for two reasons: it volumises slightly more than Benefit.  Neither of them claim to be volumising mascaras but it’s a nice extra to have in case you don’t fancy using a separate second coat.  Secondly, the price – of course!  At £18.50 less than the Primark mascara, that is a serious saving!

I will probably treat myself to Rollerlash again one time in the future, but at the moment I’m very happy with my Primark offering!

It’s worth mentioning that since I bought my Primark mascaras, they have changed the packaging.  Most of them seem to be uniform in black and gold packaging now – so you’ll have to go by the names if you’re looking for the ones I’ve reviewed!

Have you tried either of these mascaras?  What do you think of them?  What’s your favourite mascara of all brands?  Let me know in the comments!

I wish you could get Primark online too. I’d love to try some of their makeup as it sounds amazing but I haven’t been able to get any because of a mix of health and them not having anything in when I actually do go. I think I’ll be trying some of their mascaras if they have any, they sound really good and such a great price. I’ll probably come away with a whole basket full of stuff!

Tell me about it hun – that is literally my only complaint! I know exactly what you mean – I only get there a few times a year due to health. I used to pop in most weeks before I got ill, as I worked in town. Although that was a bit dangerous haha! I’m lucky that we have a big Primark here, so they usually have a pretty decent selection of makeup. I will keep my fingers crossed for you that you make it in there hun, and if you do, let me know what you think! xx

That does sound dangerous, I’d spend time much if I wentn in that often! The one nearest me is pretty big and has a lot of nail varnishes but that’s it as far as I could find. I think I’m going in when my sister visits so crossing my fingers they have some. A second bigger one opened fairly near me maybe a year ago but there’s walking and stairs so I haven’t got to it yet as the nearer one is close to the car park. I’ll have to try and get to the new one one day and see if they have any.
