Hey guys! You may remember one of my much older posts, Foundation Fight, where I pitched several different foundations against each other (excuse the crap photos, I’d only been blogging two months then!) Well, I’ve been meaning to write a similar post for ages now, but this time about mascara. Here comes….dun dun dunnnn…. Mascara Match!! Today I’m pitting Primark Volumising Ultra Black against Benefit Bad Gal Lash!
I’ve thought to myself so many times that people need to know how great Primark mascaras are! They’ve been really upping their game with makeup recently, but two of the mascaras I love have been around for a few years. I’ve been so impressed with them that I buy them over and over. Another huge contender, and cult mascara-maker, is Benefit – who hasn’t heard of Bad Gal, They’re Real or Rollerlash? Nobody, that’s who!
I was originally going to write about six mascaras in this one post, but it got a lil out of hand and long! So I’ve broken it into three parts – the next two will be coming shortly, so stay tuned! [Part 2 is here!]
Budget v High-End Makeup
It’s so easy to assume that if a product costs more, it must be better. After trying out a ton of different makeup products and brands over the years, I feel like that’s really not the case. Some of my go-to products that I use every single time I wear makeup are budget AKA cheap! I rave on to anyone I know ‘in real life’ about how great Primark mascaras are, and that they must try them. I even bought one for my sister-in-law to try! So it’s about darn time that I share the secret with you guys!
The Volumising Macaras
These mascaras are the ones you turn to when you want to amp up the volume! You want thick, bold lashes that take a makeup look to the next level.
Primark Volumising Ultra Black Mascara
This volumising mascara (in the pink packaging) has a large, dense, almost bobbly wand. It looks like it’d be hard to use without getting it everywhere, but actually it’s fine. I personally wear two mascaras when I do my makeup. I like my first one to lengthen and define the lashes, and the second one to amp up the volume.
This mascara is a good one for the second coat, as it really volumises and thickens the lashes. It gets them really long and thick, giving almost a false lash effect. The formula lasts perfectly, with no smudging. It isn’t waterproof (I don’t actually use waterproof mascaras) but unless you’re planning on swimming or crying, it should last you for the whole day or night! The only downside for me, as someone who is often too unwell to go out, is that you can’t buy it online.
Benefit Bad Gal Lash Macara
Benefit say: “Sexy, dramatic, pure unadulterated black mascara for full, voluminous lashes. Famously big brush coats lashes with our thick black formula.” The wand is very large, fibrous but quite soft. I find that I have to be quite careful with this wand, otherwise I can easily smudge mascara onto my face (we’ve all been there!)
This was actually the first Benefit mascara I tried, several years ago. I’d heard a lot about it, and seen it in all the magazines. It seemed to be raved about, so I guess my initial expectations were quite high! I should say here that I like dramatic mascaras – I don’t go in for the natural look!
Being honest, I was really disappointed when I first tried this one. It is nice and black, so that’s a tick. But it doesn’t particularly separate my lashes or lengthen them much. It does volumise a little, but without the length, it looks a little odd and clumpy. Benefit Bad Gal isn’t waterproof but doesn’t smudge or crumble and does last all day.
I think if you’re after a natural daytime mascara and don’t mind your lashes having less impact, then this mascara is ok. But for £18.50 I personally want a lot more out of a mascara!
So I think the result is pretty clear – Primark is the out and out WINNER!
Although it only claims to volumise, it also separates and lengthens. It lasts well and doesn’t crumble or smudge. And at £16.50 less than Benefit Bad Gal, I’m happy with that!! You could use the spare change to buy yourself a whole new outfit whilst you’re in Primark buying the mascara haha 😀
It’s worth mentioning that since I bought my Primark mascaras, they have changed the packaging. Most of them seem to be uniform in black and gold packaging now – so you’ll have to go by the names if you’re looking for the ones I’ve reviewed!
