Hey guys! I’ve been testing this little treasure behind the scenes for a while now. I was approached by Organic Aromas, who offered to send me an essential oil diffuser to try. They also kindly sent me a bottle of their Signature Blend Oil to get me started. I’ve never used an essential oil diffuser before, but I do use oils in burners – the ones where you put a few drops in the top and light a candle underneath, to diffuse the scent. I really like the traditional oil burners, but obviously you can’t leave them unattended and they use up a lot of tealights! I was given this product free of charge in order to review, but as always, my opinions are honest and all my own.
Who Are Organic Aromas?
Organic Aromas are an American company, comprised of a group of passionate, experienced health care professionals. They have combined knowledge from Asia with new technology to create a range of essential oil diffusers and oils. They feel that using essential oils in our everyday lives can help us develop a richer, full lifestyle. I don’t know about that, as my lifestyle doesn’t feel too rich when I’m stuck in bed ill, haha! But saying that, I’ve actually really enjoyed playing around with different oils and scents, and it has genuinely been giving me pleasure!
Organic Aromas sell a range of essential oil diffusers, mostly around the $95 price-point (approx £70). They also stock hand-carved diffusers, which are around $175 (approx £130). In addition, they have a decent range of different essential oils, including blends, pure oils and gift sets.
What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils have been used for many years over various cultures throughout the world. Essential oils are highly-concentrated, non-water soluble phytochemicals (biologically active compounds found in plants) which are distilled from the different parts of various plants. The oils can be distilled from leaves, flowers, roots and other parts of plants. They are famed for being very strong, so you only require very small amounts of them (always follow instructions).
Why Are Essential Oils Beneficial?
Like I mentioned, I have dabbled in using essential oils in the past. I’ve mostly used them for the scents, burning them in oil burners. On occasion, I’ve turned to them for more specific reasons, such as to help me sleep, to aid my travel sickness, and more recently to help with my crazy hot flushes! One thing I’ve learnt is that oils work in different ways for different ailments/uses. Some can work by being smelt/breathed in (entering your olfactory system). Some have to actually be absorbed into the skin in order to work. The geranium oil I’ve been using recently for my hot flushes/temperature issues apparently works best absorbed into your skin (for example in a bath). However, you can inhale a few drops from a tissue if you’re out and about. I think I’ll be doing a post about my temperature issues (due to M.E/fibro) and what helps in the future, if anyone is interested!
Essential oils not only smell lovely and can scent your home, they have also been used for centuries for a variety of specific purposes. Some can help you relax and de-stress (lavender – famed for helping people get to sleep!). Some help you to focus better (rosemary, basil, peppermint). Some are widely recommended for helping things like the menopause, even suggested by main-stream medical doctors (clary sage being a popular one)! You can even use essential oils as part of making your own cleaning products and cosmetics! As long as they are used correctly and in appropriate does, they are totally safe and non-toxic (even for children). Essential oils can be extremely powerful to aid in healing and supporting the body’s emotional and physical well-being.
The Radiance Essential Oil Nebulizing Diffuser
I chose the Radiance Essential Oil Diffuser, although there are a range of different styles available. The Raindrop is a nice one if you prefer a minimal style. It arrived extremely well packaged, with everything firmly encased in foam (and the glass part in an additional velvet bag). This is great because the actual glass part of the diffuser is fairly delicate, so I think it would have risked being damaged in transit if the packaging wasn’t so well thought out!
The essential oil diffuser couldn’t be easier to set up. You literally pop the glass part into the hole in the base, plug the adapter in and put the plug in the wall – then you’re good to go! It’s also extremely easy to use. The box contains full instructions on setup, first use and how to maintain and clean the diffuser. It also warns that you should not use thick oils such as sandalwood and cypress or massage oils like jojoba, almond or grape seed oil. They are too thick and will clog the mechanism.
I loved the fact that it also came with two long pipettes – this means you don’t have to wait until you’ve used up all the oil in the diffuser until you can try a different one. If you’ve had enough of the oil that’s in there, simply use the pipette to remove it (you can drop it back into the bottle). That little touch actually really made a difference for me. I wanted to try energising oils in the morning, to wake me up, and more relaxing ones at night. With the pipette I can change the oils as often as I want to!
The diffuser is practically noiseless when in use. The little heating element lights up with colour-changing LED lights when it’s working. The diffuser spends two minutes on and one off. It will continue this cycle until you switch it off. If you forget, it will automatically switch off after two hours, which is perfect, as you don’t have to worry if you fall asleep or forget! It gives out a visible little plume of steam but the aroma diffuses really nicely across the room. I really like that the stopper allows you to direct the steam flow! I direct it right towards me if I want to lie and inhale the scent (for example to relax). When I just want the room to be scented nicely, I direct it away from my face. It’s lovely to have the choice.
How Does an Essential Oil Diffuser Work?
Put simply, the diffuser works on electricity. There is no water or chemicals involved. I’m no expert, so I’ll tell you what Organic Aromas say!
“The nebulizing diffuser works by using what is known as the Bernoulli principle, a theorem of fluid dynamics that provides the best results when diffusing essential oil. Here are the basics of the process:
- When an air current is forced through a small tube, the velocity is increased while the pressure at the exit point is reduced.
- That difference in pressure creates a kind of suction that causes the essential oils within a separate glass tube to rise upwards.
- As the essential oil rises, a stream of pressurized air hits the essential oil and causes it to atomize into micro particles that fill the glass reservoir.
- Once in the glass reservoir, those tiny particles rise up and are emitted out of the glass cap in a (waterless) mist that is released into the local environment.
- The remaining particles of essential oil return to the bottom of the diffuser creating a cycle that will repeat until the oil has been used up completely.”
My Favourite Essential Oils
I might do another post about this in the future, as I’ve been really enjoying experimenting and finding out what works for me! My favourite oils for (MUCH needed!) energy in the morning have been lemon, grapefruit and sweet orange. For relaxation, I’ve been really enjoying the Boots Clear Your Mind blend – it smells just like a spa! I’ve also been using geranium oil for my hot flushes, which has the added benefit of smelling a bit like Turkish Delight! I have to admit, I also have a cinnamon oil all lined up for Christmas! 🙂
Organic Aromas sell plenty of individual oils and blends. They also sell sets such as the sampler pack, containing six bottles (such as sweet orange, peppermint and an energy blend). Their ‘Master Aromatherapist’ set is aimed at those who have an understanding of aromatherapy or those who wish to explore the true benefits of essential oils. I feel like all of the sets would make lovely gifts, as they come in smart boxes (most of which are wooden with gold clasps – very fancy!)
Organic Aromas have a 15% discount that can be used by anyone who purchases from them. Simply use the code SHAREME at checkout!
I know this was a really long review, but you know me! I like to test things out properly and give you all the information. There are so many two paragraph reviews of products out there that don’t answer any of your questions – I just aim to cover everything I personally would want to know!
As you can tell, I was really impressed by my essential oil diffuser. I’ve already had a ton of use out of it, and can see me using it regularly in the future. I found Organic Aromas to be a really nice, approachable small business who I would be happy to support.
Have you tried an essential oil diffuser? What did you think? What are your favourite essential oils? Let me know in the comments!
