So this is my very first blog post – exciting times! I’ve been an avid reader of blogs for a long time. When I was younger, it was mainly lifestyle and beauty blogs. Since becoming chronically ill, I have read a lot of “spoonie blogs” (if you don’t know what a spoonie is, please take a moment to Google the spoon theory, it’ll make a lot more sense).
I have always really liked makeup and beauty, but since spending a lot of time sick in bed, watching YouTube vloggers, it has become somewhat of an obsession! When you feel unwell all the time (we’ll get to that soon!), it’s amazing how much better a bit of makeup, or a nice sparkly nail polish, or a hydrating face mask can make you feel. Sure, it’s never going to cure me, but if I’m going to have entire sleepless nights, I need me some decent foundation and concealer!!
I also get great pleasure from food (I used to be a prolific baker but my illness has for the most part put a stop to that!). I enjoy shopping (though mainly online these days), making jewellery and card-making. This blog is going to document not only my life with M.E and Fibromyalgia, but my makeup looks, beauty hauls, reviews, makes and whatever else takes my fancy!
So I’ve referred to my “illness” a few times now. I haven’t had good health since the age of around 15, when I had a prolonged and severe case of glandular fever. I’ve never had a strong immune system and was famed amongst my friends for always having something new and different wrong with me! However I had a good few years around the ages of 24 – 27, where I got quite into fitness and even joined a roller derby team! (Check them out at http://hotwheelrollerderby.co.uk – they are a bunch of amazing, bad-ass women!)
Unfortunately I began really struggling a few years ago, had no energy and was falling asleep all the time. I constantly had unexplained aches and pains and just didn’t seem to have the stamina of my friends and partner. I can still remember the moment it hit me that something just was not right… I was driving home from a physio appointment for the TMJ (a jaw disorder) and I just felt so completely unwell that I cried all the way home. I couldn’t remember the last time I had felt even just “okay”. Thankfully I made it home safely through the tears (!) but decided there and then to get some answers.
To cut a long story short, after a series of blood tests, ECG, MRI etc, I was diagnosed with M.E (myalgic encephalomyelitis – catchy huh?). The very basic description of how M.E. affects me is that I am EXTREMELY fatigued (to the point of literally being unable to get myself out of bed frequently), lack of stamina/intolerance to exertion, and a high level of pain. There is a lot more to it, but I won’t get into that now! And if any of my fellow spoonies are reading, you know it all already, right?
I was recently also diagnosed with Fibromyalgia (a widespread intense pain condition), which often goes hand in hand with M.E. So there are the very basics about me… and M.E! I will tell you all about my husband, fabulous mother, hobbies and daily life in due course. If you keep reading, that is!
Thanks for reading 🙂
