It’s beauty box time again! If you’re new to the You Beauty Box, you can find out about how the subscription works, how you can choose some of your own samples and the price in my post here. The theme for the April box was Natural and Organic. I was quite excited to hear that, as I love trying those kinds of brands!
The Balance Me face wash and the Sond face spray were the two items I chose for myself this month, the others were the bonus items.
There were two different hair masks that went out – I received this keratin one, and there was also an argan oil one. I was relieved not to have got the argan oil one, as my hair is fine and very straight, so oils are often way too much for it. The mask is a super-strengthening hydrating treatment which will restore dry, damaged hair. It is free of sulfates, gluten, alcohol and drying artificial colours.
We received a 50g sachet, which I reckon will last at least three uses (probably more on my fine hair). You simply smooth it on to clean, wet hair, focusing on any damaged areas. After 10 minutes, you can rinse and then dry your hair as usual. It would be a bit annoying to wait for that long half way through a shower, so it might be a good one to pop on whilst you’re in the bath! I haven’t had chance to test this out unfortunately. I usually try to test out everything so I can review it properly for you but I didn’t get chance with this one – sorry guys!
I’ve tried a few things by this brand – they were sometimes included in The Vegan Kind beauty box (see my reviews here). I’ve currently got one of their face washes in the shower, which is nice. This 30ml tube of face mask cleanses, exfoliates and brightens dull, lifeless skin. I wouldn’t say my skin is particularly dull, but I do use a face mask once a week to try and keep it in good condition.
It contains purifying kaolin clay to draw out impurities (great for me, as I get hormonal spots), and a skin-brightening fruit acid complex. On top of that, it also has a physical exfoliator in the form of walnut grounds, to buff away any dead skin as you wipe it off. It smells a lot like the other products, which is pleasantly herbal and a bit spa-like. The walnut grounds are fine enough not to be too rough on your face. I like this!
This was the second item I chose myself. It’s a lightweight hydrating face spray, which soothes and refreshes skin. As it contains silica, it helps boost collagen production and water retention, which is a great thing for skin that looks plumper and younger (yes, please!) It can also act as an anti-inflammatory for irritated or sensitive skin.
The 10ml tube is very slim, so could easily fit in a handbag for on-the-go touch ups! It leaves my skin feeling nice, and definitely refreshed. The only downside for me is that the spray is a little brisk! It could do with being finer, and better spread out, as you have to sort of pat it around with your fingers to cover your whole face. I see that the full sized spray comes in different packaging, so perhaps it’s not an issue with those.
These two capsules made up the second extra treat in April. I’ve never tried anything by Neom, although they’re a brand I’ve vaguely heard of. The idea behind these is that you open the capsule of aromatherapy oil when you need help in feeling a certain way – for example, you need to calm down, or feel more energised. I love the idea of finding something natural that can help you so powerfully!
You simply twist open the oil-filled capsule and pour the oil into your palms. Massage into your hands and cup them over your nose and mouth, breathing in through your nose for 7 seconds and out through your mouth for 11 seconds (classic calming breathing technique which is great for anxiety or relaxation). The blends of oils are selected especially for their various properties – the energy boosting one contains zingy grapefruit, lemon and rosemary to get you going; whereas the de-stress capsule contains relaxing lavender and jasmine.
I love the holistic approach to this product – I think the ‘ritual’ of opening the oils and doing the breathing technique will really help them have their intended effect. Even if it’s just a psychological thing, we all know how certain scents can change how we feel. These are also perfectly portable, so would be lovely for someone who needs a lunchtime energy boost at work, or maybe someone like me – I’m an anxious traveller, and love the idea of having one of the de-stress capsules on hand to distract me!
I hit a bit of a stumbling block trying to find these for sale online, but after some detective work, I think they are sold in the form of roll-ons. You get 5ml and they have a rollerball to apply them to pulsepoints. At £8 they are pretty reasonable, and definitely something I’d consider buying myself. For all my fellow spoonies – check out the energy boost one here…we all know we need more energy every day!
And that, my dears, is the whole box! I really enjoyed this one – it felt very suited to pampering and taking care of yourself, which we all need sometimes.
